The Berg

propertysalesThe Drakensberg, or uKhahlamba ('Barrier of Spears', in Zulu) is the highest mountain range in Southern Africa, rising to 3482 metres in height. It's around 1000 kilometres in extent, reaching from Mpumalanga and the Northern Province right down to the Eastern Cape, and separates KwaZulu-Natal from the Free State.

The Drakensberg Mountains are also host to the world's second highest waterfall, the Tugela Falls, with a total drop of 947 metres. The San people, or Bushmen, were the first human inhabitants of the Drakensberg, and there are thousands of bushman paintings to be found in caves and cliff overhangs throughout the Drakensberg.

Between two of its highest mountains, Cathkin Peak and Champagne Castle at 3149 metres and 3377 metres respectively, lies the beautiful Champagne valley. This area of the Drakensberg attracts many tourists because of the magnificent views and variety of activities available in the area, specifically golf and other sporting activities.

Home to beautiful forest, scrub and grassland flora, the Champagne Valley also provides the opportunity for avid bird watchers to find any of the reported 299 recorded bird species found in this region.
